Vefna terms of use
These terms apply to the Vefna app and this website. By creating an account or using Vefna, you agree to them. Vefna is run by Vefna (ABN [to be added]), a business based in Victoria, Australia ("we" and "us" in these terms). How we handle your information is covered separately in the privacy policy.
Who can use Vefna
Users must be at least 18 years of age. This is only to comply with the requirements of the AI services Vefna uses. For example, Google's Gemini API terms require users of the apps built on it to be 18 or over.
When you first open Vefna, you're asked to confirm your age. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 18, we may close it and delete its data.
Your account
- Give accurate details when you sign up, and keep your sign-in secure. You're responsible for what happens under your account.
- An account is for one person. Don't share it.
- You can delete your account at any time, in the app (Settings, then Delete account) or by following the steps on the account deletion page.
What Vefna does
Vefna is a reading aid. It takes the books you add and weaves words from the language you're learning into the text, a few at a time. It isn't a substitute for a qualified teacher or course.
Vefna is in testing. Features may change or be removed, the service may be unavailable at times, and usage limits apply, such as a daily allowance for how many pages can be woven.
AI-generated pages and reporting
Woven pages are created by AI services run by Google, Alibaba Cloud or OpenAI, depending on the model chosen in Settings. When you open a page, its text and your list of known words are sent to the service. The privacy policy explains how that works and what each provider does with the text.
AI output isn't always right. A woven page may contain mistakes, unnatural wording, incorrect translations or unexpected content, so check anything you rely on.
If a page contains something offensive, harmful or plainly wrong, please report it. In the app, open the page in the reader and tap Report. You can also email vefna.app@gmail.com. We review the reports we receive and use them to improve how pages are made.
The AI providers have their own rules about what their services can be used for. For example, see Google's Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy and OpenAI's usage policies. You agree not to use Vefna in a way that breaks them.
Your books and files
- Respect copyright. Only add files that you own, that are in the public domain, or that you have the necessary rights to use this way. We don't check files, so this is your responsibility.
- You keep ownership of the books you add. You give us permission to store and process them, including sending their text to the AI services, only so that we can provide Vefna to you. We don't claim ownership of your books or of the woven pages made from them.
- Your books are private to your account and aren't shown to other users. Don't share woven pages or other copyrighted content from Vefna without the necessary rights to do so.
- Vefna doesn't use your books to train AI models. What the AI providers do with the text is covered in the privacy policy.
- Don't add content that is unlawful.
- You can delete any book, or all your data, at any time. See the deletion page.
The starter library
Vefna includes a small library of books that are in the public domain, taken from Project Gutenberg. They're offered as a convenience, and some may have been edited for use in the app, such as removing illustrations and front matter. Each book lists its source in the library. Adding one puts a copy in your own library.
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- try to get around usage limits, or use Vefna in an automated way, such as scraping or bulk requests;
- try to access another person's account or data, or probe, disrupt or overload our systems;
- copy, reverse engineer or resell Vefna, except where the law allows it;
- use Vefna to create content that is unlawful, that is harmful to others, or that breaks the AI providers' rules.
Copyright concerns
We respond to clear notices of alleged copyright infringement. If you believe something stored in Vefna infringes your copyright, email vefna.app@gmail.com with details of the work and where you believe it appears. We'll look into it and reply within 30 days.
We may remove a book, and the woven pages made from it, if it appears to infringe copyright or otherwise breaks these terms. Accounts that repeatedly infringe copyright or other intellectual property rights may be terminated.
Suspending and ending accounts
We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, or that puts the service or other people at risk. This includes accounts that add content they don't have the right to use. Where it's reasonable to do so, we'll tell you why. You can stop using Vefna and delete your account whenever you like. What happens to your information afterwards is described in the privacy policy.
Warranties and liability
Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies any right or remedy you have under Australian law that can't lawfully be excluded, including the consumer guarantees in the Australian Consumer Law.
Subject to that, Vefna is provided "as is". We don't promise it will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that AI-woven pages will be accurate. To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of data, arising from your use of Vefna.
Changes
We may update these terms, and will change the date at the top when we do. If a change significantly affects you, we'll let you know before it takes effect. Continuing to use Vefna after that means you accept the updated terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of Victoria, Australia, and the courts of Victoria can hear any dispute about them.
